Is Your Pet Having an Emergency?

As pet parents, we’ve all faced that terrifying moment: your cat won’t stop vomiting, your dog is suddenly limping, or something just feels off. But how do you know if it’s truly an emergency—or if it can wait for your family vet in the morning?

At Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Prosper and Frisco (VESHPF), we’re here to take the guesswork (and panic) out of the equation. Below, you’ll find guidance to help you decide when to seek immediate care—and when it’s safe to wait. But remember: if you’re ever in doubt, call us or come in. We’re open 24/7, and we’d always rather see a healthy pet than miss a critical moment.

Signs Your Pet Needs Emergency Care Now

If your pet is showing any of the following symptoms, they should be seen by a veterinarian immediately:

  • Difficulty breathing (or open-mouth breathing in cats)

  • Suspected poisoning or ingestion of toxins (e.g., chocolate, xylitol, medications)

  • Bloated or distended abdomen

  • Sudden or severe pain (crying out, reluctance to move, guarding belly)

  • Bleeding that won’t stop or deep wounds

  • Trauma (hit by a car, fall from height, animal attack)

  • Inability to urinate or defecate—especially straining without producing anything

  • Labor complications or active labor with no puppies/kittens delivered in over an hour

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, especially with blood

  • Collapse, fainting, or unresponsiveness

  • Paralysis or sudden weakness in one or more limbs

  • Seizures, especially clusters or lasting over 2 minutes
